Wounds, limps and an example of health care in action

Gene seems to have developed a klutz gene since retirement. Not only did he manage to break a toe before we left home, he seems determined to keep that limp going.

He had a petite blessure the other day washing the breakfast dishes when he hit a porcelain pitcher against the granite countertop. It broke and a heavy shard hit his bare foot. Lots of blood, but not too bad a cut. I found myself rehearsing the French for "my husband is bleeding uncontrollably" while mopping his foot and the floor.

I dug out the wound kit I've been carrying around unused since buying it for the jungles of Asia, cleaned up the cut and pulled it together with a couple of steri-strips. A couple of days later it still looked a bit swollen so we decided to have the local nurse take a look at it and Gene limped over to his office at 11:30. The cabinet infirmier is open only between 11:30 and 12:00 each day, and the rest of the time he makes house calls. Health care anyone?

The visit cost 12 euros and Gene limped off, assured nothing was wrong and it would be fine in a day or two. At least it was the already-broken-toed foot. It would have been too hard to keep from laughing otherwise.

He's fine now, by the way.
